Internship Readiness

Someone who is internship ready doesn’t have a problem with maintaining the little skills. For example, time management would not be an issue as well as taking initiative and being accountable. Some qualities a person who is internship ready demonstrates a positive attitude always, is punctual, engages in class discussions/participates actively and shows that he or she is ready and willing to learn. Entering this new module I will “step my game up”, I have gotten comfortable in the program and forgotten that since day 1 the interview has begun. One growth area that I have gotten feedback in was my participation in class and join discussions more often. I will start to take initiative and work on my leadership roles so I can work to my full potential. I believe I have a great attitude and am very easy to get along with, but I let my quietness/shyness get the best of me. I believe my lack of participation affects my low energy in class so I will convert on that feedback hoping it will do some progress.

My Experience At Compass Family Resource Center

The best job I have ever had was working as a intern at Compass Family Resource Center (CFRC). Till this day I still consider working at CFRC my dream job. After internship I would have got hired as a part time employee but they did not have the funds to support this. My duties at CFRC consisted of working with pre-school age children while their parents attended workshops or other services, help setup the structure for family development classes, help translate, assist the front desk receptionist as needed this included: answering phone calls/ filing paperwork / distributing mail, creating flyers for different events, and helping with drop-in hours twice a week.  I enjoyed working at this job because I interacted with many people throughout the day especially children, I love kids. Some things that I did not enjoy was so much leisure time I had. When the office was busy it was super busy, everything would be fast pace, but when the office was slow I would run out of things to do and be bored much of the time. I enjoyed all my responsibility’s working there except for being the one who needed to translate an unpleasant message to a client. I was stuck as being the one receiving all the negative emotions when I was strictly just doing my job. The skills that I learned and I believe will be useful for me are communication skills, I believe if I am placed in the IT track this this skill will help me handle clients during ticketing. I also believe I can use time management as a valuable skill in my internship, so I prioritize getting tasks done.

Mural Response

In my opinion, Diego Rivera’s Frozen Assets mural does not relate to the Occupy Movement because I do not see the connection. It may be that I am not looking deep enough or may have to look at the mural from a different perspective. In the middle section I believe the mural can relate to the Occupy Movement because it can represent the many protestors trying to prove a point and what extreme measures they may take until it comes across. Glancing another time at the mural I then noticed that the top portion of the mural can represent wall street, how it may have been “back in the day.” Although, the first portion is not a street, I think the tall New York buildings/sky scrapers can very well be a good representation of Wall Street. In my opinion I believe people from the Occupy Movement are inspirational because they are willing to go through extreme measures and diuretics circumstances to stand up for what they believe in. I admire people who stand up for what they believe in because many just let themselves get pushed over and don’t express their thoughts. My first reaction looking at the middle part of the mural was that people in poverty and/or homeless are separated from the average Civilians and are also separated from people with power and that are really wealthy. The last section of the mural makes me feel angry that the wealthy build walls against middle and low class economy.

My Inspirations

To me the definition of inspiration is something that motivates me when I hear and/or see it. One of two things that inspire me very much is music. Although I am not a big fan of slow jam’s one artist specifically Keyshia Cole inspires me when I listen to her. I feel her music empowers women and when I hear it, it makes me reminisce on a point in my life where everything was going well. One of the other things that inspire me most is this beautiful view in the city; my friends and I call it “the Million Dollar View.” Every time we go there we end up having real in depth conversations and talking about the weirdest things. The spot shows the whole view of the City up to the Bay Bridge, its location is pretty confusing to get to but basically it is in the center of Bernal Height, on the top of the hill. Just looking at the View makes me think of what I want to achieve, who I have become and what I’ve done wrong in the past and how I could learn from these experiences. The “Million Dollar Spot inspires me a lot. First off it makes me feel proud to be from the City and to live in it. It also motivates me to want to do big things and become successful in life. There is another spot not quite like “the million dollar” spot but has an amazing view as well. My cousin brought me to this view and we call it “the View”. Its located in Daly City but in the back of a park, in order to get to it you have to go under fences and hike up a very dirty hill. It’s a struggle to get up there but is all the most rewarding. The view inspires me as much as the “Million Dollar” spot and whenever I go up there everyone else usually feels the same because we end up having real good conversations.

Victory Outreach

Victory Outreach is a International Christian Church ministry that was first started in 1967 by Pastor Sunny Argonzoni in East LA. The vision of the church is to take the "treasures out of darkness", helping people who are bound by strong holds to find Jesus once again. I had the privilege of being apart of the San Francisco Church Ministry when I was younger. Although, I don’t attend services no more I still keep in contact with many of the member's from there (I consider them a lot like family )and they welcome me with open arms. Sunday morning services are now held at the local YMCA in the Bayview District until they have a permanent building and youth service are held at the youth leaders house every Friday night. Every year they have world conference events where the entire communities around the world gather together for a huge service that last a whole week usually. What stuck out the most to me about this church was the activities they had and how they incorporated their sermons to daily activities. While being apart of this church I learned life changing experiences and valuable lessons. While being apart of this community I felt comfortable and i consider everyone there to be like family. When I used to think of church I used to think that it was boring and made up of a whole bunch if stories i stero-typed that people who attended were "weak" and needed someone to help them resolve their problems, I realized I was very wrong.

Reflection Of Module 1

Throughout the past weeks I have realized my strengths and weakness's, some came as no surprise and others were eye opening . My overall performance in each class was satisfying but I strongly feel I can do better and didn't reach my full potential. A few of my strengths I have noticed are being on time, maintaining passing grades, made sure assignments were turned in on time, and staying organized. Some of my weakness's include underestimating myself, prioritizing, code switching, participate and engage more in class discussions and poor study habits. For the next module I plan to put 100% effort in everything I encounter.

Daly City ---------> San Francisco .

Throughout my whole life I’ve always moved from city to city within the Bay Area. I consider myself to have grown up in Daly City though because I spent my high school and middle school years there. Growing up in Daly City was very boring. In middle school the only thing to do was go hang out at the mall, and the only thing to do in high school was spend time at local parks or people’s houses. Growing up in Daly City I soon realized the cops are always around, hovering looking for people that are up to no good. Since Daly City wasn’t very interesting usually me and my friends would go to top of the hill and catch the bus to “the City” San Francisco, usually the mission. Although we would usually do the same things in the City as we did in Daly City it was just more interesting to be out there, especially the huge diversity of people, the people weren’t so boring and the cops didn’t mess with us as much. I believe my neighborhood didn’t shape me necessarily but the neighborhood I grew up in did. The environment I grew up in made me the person I am today, only eighteen years old and very mature. I’ve had the advantage of learning from other people’s mistakes and seeing just how cold people really could be. In general I feel that whatever doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger, and what I mean by that is no matter what type of background you came from (the suburbs or rougher part of town) it is your decision to let it get the best of you and affect your life.

The Opportunity Divide Thoughts

After reading the article “the poverty business” I feel a variety of different emotions towards people with bad credit and the creditors. My first reaction towards the first story, reading about Roxanne made me feel sympathetic how not just car dealer ships but other companies take advantage, manipulate, and misinform customers who want to buy a product. Customers like Roxanne and relatives of mine have been victims in many types of situation by later realizing just exactly what they have got into, when it is already too late and the damage to their credit has already been done. I believe credit is an unnecessary thing that we shouldn’t have to use and deal with. I think it is unfair that we are being judged by a number and this effects our ability to buy a car or a house etc.,.
I also believe that Check Into Cash and Cash Advance Centers are a  rip off and not worth it for the high interest rates they charge. These companies take advantage of the need for cash in advance and exploit their customers. Someone from the passage stated “I don’t know whether I was more bothered by the ignorance of the customers or by the company taking advantage of the ignorance of the customers,” I strongly agree with this quote because it is the customers responsibility to be well informed of what they are getting to and contracts they are signing although, I am well aware that in most cases people fall victims to Cash Advance because they have no other choice. For the people who fall in debt because of their lack of not knowing exactly what they are getting into, I believe it is preventable and not the Company’s fault. The companies are wrong for doing these things but I mean today in this generation you have to hustle for your money and get it in every way possible.
